Oil spills are a hazard to marine life and their habitat. Between 2010 and 2025, Clallam MRC has offered two types of training annually to provide community members with the skills needed to respond in the event of an oil spill. This includes Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training and oiled wildlife response training.

The Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training provides basic training in who is involved in oil spill response, precautions required for those responding to a spill, and the current state of spill response preparedness.

Oiled wildlife rescue training provides an opportunity to learn the skills needed to search for, capture, and rehabilitate oiled birds and other wildlife.

2025 HAZWOPER and Oiled Wildlife Training

Clallam MRC held its most recent oil spill preparedness trainings in April 2025. Participants trained over 2 days to refresh their HAZWOPER certifications if applicable, and to respond to oiled birds and other wildlife. Credit to Rebecca Mahan for photos from the event:

Oiled Wildlife Training Resources

Interested in oiled wildlife response training and want a sample of what it's like? Recently got certified to respond and want to refresh your memory?

These four training presentations were developed by International Bird Rescue and shared with the Clallam MRC. Please note that these videos are for general educational use only; they cannot replace in-person training, and do not certify the viewer to respond to oiled wildlife in the field.
